Why do quotations for shredders of the same model vary from high to low? — The core gap lies in the “three major components”
Many customers encounter the same confusion when selecting shredders: units marked as “Model 800” or “Model 1000”, even with identical motor power, can have vastly different price quotes from different manufacturers. Is one of the suppliers “falsely labeling” specifications? In fact, price differences rarely arise without reason; they stem from the shredder’s three core components — the motor, reducer and blades. These three parts are what determine the value of a machine.

Motors: Same power, different quality

The motor is the shredder’s power source. Many customers only look at power ratings such as 15kW or 75kW, yet same power does not mean same quality.
Quality shredders adopt standard copper-wound motors. They feature solid construction, good heat dissipation, strong overload resistance and stable performance during continuous operation.
Some low-cost suppliers use aluminum windings or cut corners. These motors may work briefly, but easily overheat or burn out under long heavy loads. Differences in motor brand, insulation and protection class also create price gaps.

Reducer: Model & brand, 2nd key price factor

The reducer acts as the shredder’s “heart”. It converts the motor’s high speed into low speed with high torque for shredding.
Even for reducers, capacity varies greatly by model size. Brands differ widely in gear material, machining precision, sealing and service life.
Imported or top-brand reducers cost several times more than ordinary ones. Cheap shredders use small, low-grade reducers. They work at first, but suffer gear wear, oil leaks or shaft breakage over time. Repair costs will far exceed the money saved.

Blades: The hidden core with the biggest price gap

While the motor and the gearbox may account for some of the price difference, the blades are the primary factor. The operating efficiency and service life of a shredder depend, to a large extent, on its blades. The price variation among blades is mainly determined by three factors: diameter, thickness, and material.

  • Diameter & Thickness: Larger, thicker blades use more material, deliver stronger cutting power and cost more.
  • Material (most critical): Blade steel determines wear resistance and service life. Common grades: 55SiCr, M6V, H13. H13 features high hardness and wear resistance for long-term shredding of hard materials without easy wear or breakage. Select blade material based on your material hardness.
  • Common misconception: Do not judge only by blade diameter. Some suppliers make big-diameter blades but use inferior steel. Though blades look large, the production cost remains low while performance drops greatly.

Conclusion

A shredder is long-term heavy equipment. Cheap models may cut your upfront cost, yet later expenses on repairs, downtime and blade replacement often outweigh the savings.
When buying, check these three core parts: motor brand, reducer model & brand, blade diameter, thickness and material. Knowing them helps you pick a cost-effective shredder.
